August 2007
It’s August and
while it is still summer, fall is fast approaching. This year’s
lambs seem to be more special than ever. Please see the listing on
our Sales page. See our
"Sales" page for some lamb pictures.
Icelandics are truly
beautiful sheep with much to offer. They come in many patterns and
colors. Their fleeces are dual coated and consist of a soft inner
fleece called the thel and a coarser outer fleece called the tog. We
shear our sheep twice a year and harvest about 6 pounds per adult
ewe. The adult ewes weigh an average of 120-130 pounds and the adult
rams weigh an average of 180 pounds. Personalities vary from very
friendly to quite shy—but always very special.
We are raising Icelandic sheep for
their beautiful fleeces and the sheer enjoyment of having them and
the beauty they bring to us as well as our landscape.
There are pros and cons for breeding
ewe lambs and although we have bred some of the ewe lambs in the
past without any problems, this year we are planning on letting most
of them grow without the added responsibility of motherhood. |
