REGISTERED ICELANDIC SHEEP
FIBER AND BREEDING STOCK

Welcome to Ridge Top Icelandics...

August 2007

It’s August and while it is still summer, fall is fast approaching. This year’s lambs seem to be more special than ever. Please see the listing on our Sales page.  See our "Sales" page for some lamb pictures.

Icelandics are truly beautiful sheep with much to offer. They come in many patterns and colors. Their fleeces are dual coated and consist of a soft inner fleece called the thel and a coarser outer fleece called the tog. We shear our sheep twice a year and harvest about 6 pounds per adult ewe. The adult ewes weigh an average of 120-130 pounds and the adult rams weigh an average of 180 pounds. Personalities vary from very friendly to quite shy—but always very special.

We are raising Icelandic sheep for their beautiful fleeces and the sheer enjoyment of having them and the beauty they bring to us as well as our landscape.

There are pros and cons for breeding ewe lambs and although we have bred some of the ewe lambs in the past without any problems, this year we are planning on letting most of them grow without the added responsibility of motherhood.

We are located in Rising Sun which is 2 hours west of Madison and 1 hour south of La Crosse in Southwest Wisconsin. Our sheep have ten fenced acres to wander about and several shelters. You are welcome to stop for a visit. Questions are welcome at our email address: ridgetop@mwt.net .

We have been lucky enough to keep our wethers or have sold them to “fiber” people. Wethers have the most beautiful fleeces and are not ruled by hormones so they make great pets. Our wethers are $100 –ask for what we have available. All the wethers from this year’s lamb crop have been sold, but we do have some yearlings available.

Our sheep are registered through the Canadian Livestock Records Corporation, the CLRC.

This is the 5th year our flock is has been enrolled in the Voluntary Scrapie program. We also belong to the Icelandic Sheep Breeders of North America. Their site is www.isbona.com , and we are members of the Wisconsin Sheep Breeders Association.

If you are new to sheep there are some things you will need for starters—so here it goes:

--Sheep will need fencing—woven wire works best, we have welded wire fencing-no
barbed wire (sheep have a tendency to rub on fencing)

--A shelter
--Hay bales – 10 sheep to a 40 pound bale/day
--Mineral salt for sheep (copper is toxic)
--Grain mix – nice for a treat
--Wormers
--Hoof trimers
--Water buckets

Please see our “Sales” page for the ewes/rams we have for sale at this time. Also, if you are interested in fiber, please check out our “Fleece” page.

You are welcome to visit our farm and see our beautiful sheep. Please check out our lamb page for pictures and prices! Thank you for visiting our web site and hope you do already enjoy or will begin to enjoy the wonderful world of Icelandic Sheep.
